Jean-Manuel fonctionne à l’intuition. Lorsqu’Éric Léandri évoque la nécessité d’offrir une alternative à Google, pourtant leader absolu sur son marché, il lui emboite le pas, convaincu que l’on peut prospérer sur une promesse :respecter la vie privée des utilisateurs.
Savez-vous qu’aux Etats-Unis, la NSA a accès aux serveurs de sociétés comme Google et donc à toutes les données personnelles que vous renseignez en utilisant leurs services ?
Quand Jean-Manuel et Éric présentent leur projet en 2013 au Ministère du Redressement Productif, le conseiller qui les reçoit croit à une plaisanterie !
À cette époque, personne n’avait pris conscience de ce qui se passait avec Internet
En 2010, Jean-Manuel rencontre Éric, au départ simplementpour lui apporter des fonds. « Puis il m’a expliqué ce qu’Internet était en train de devenir et la nécessité de proposer une alternative, alors je l’ai suivi.» Ensemble, ils partent à l’assaut du "plus grand marché du monde, le marché du search" en lançant le premier moteur de recherche qui ne collecte pas les données personnelles de ses utilisateurs, disponible aujourd’hui en 25 langues dans 42 pays. « On ne s’intéresse pas à qui ils sont mais à ce qu’ils cherchent. Notre univers de produits et de services est basé sur la confiance.»
Et ça fonctionne :
L’augmentation du trafic de Qwant estexponentielle avec 115 millions de requêtes en novembre 2018 ! Depuis le début, le trafic grandit de 10 à 20% par mois.
L’Assemblée Nationale, les régions Ile-de-France et PACA, la ville de Paris mais aussi le géant Thalès, tous ont abandonné Google pour Qwant.
Depuis toujours, Jean-Manuel s’inscrit dans son époque,souvent avec un peu d'avance. « Je suis plutôt pas mauvais pour sentir ce qui vient, voir venir le coup d’après.» La preuve de son sens du timing : il se lance dans le trading à NewYork dans les années 80, investit dans les marchés émergents dans les années 90, dans Internet en 2000 et enfin dans le respect de la vie privée dans les années 2010 "The next big thing".
L’intuition c’est un mélange d’intelligence, de connaissances et de mémoire. On en a tous à divers degrés. La vie est un rébus qu’il faut déchiffrer : elle vous donne des signes, des indices, place des gens sur votre route. Il faut tout écouter et malgré tout suivre sa propre idée.
Et il ajoute «J’ai toujours essayé de ne faire que des choses qui m’amusaient ou me passionnaient.» C’est d’ailleurs son conseil aux étudiants: «Y croire, croire en soi et croire en ce que l’on fait.»
Même s’il reconnait que l’époque est anxiogène, elle recèle de mille opportunités qui n’existaient pas avant. La liste des pôles d’attractivité ne cesse de s’allonger, en France et dans le monde, et les métiers de demain sont à inventer. « Le monde regorge de liquidités, il y a de l’argent pour tout, des fonds pour toutes les bonnes idées.» Et il ajoute pour conclure :
La technologie d’hier a résolu les problèmes d’avant-hier, et a créé ceux d’aujourd’hui qui à leur tour seront résolus par la technologie de demain !

Dans les années 70, notre prof de maths de classe préparatoire, Claude Riahi, nous annonce qu’il intègre le Conseil d’Administration d’une petite école alors peu connue, dans laquelle il enseigne aussi, l’ISC Paris. Nous l’avons tous suivi avec enthousiasme. Nous avions la sensation de participer à la naissance de quelque chose et c’était le cas ! Quand je vois aujourd’hui le succès de l’Ecole et de ses diplômés, je me dis qu’avec mes copains, nous avons eu raison d’écouter notre intuition !

Jean-Manuel works on intuition. When Eric Léandri talks about the need to offer an alternative to Google, the absolute leader in its market, he follows in his footsteps, convinced that we can prosper on a promise: respect users' privacy.
Did you know that in the United States, the NSA has access to the servers of companies such as Google and therefore to all the personal data you provide when using their services?
When Jean-Manuel and Éric present their project in 2013 to the Ministry of Productive Recovery, the counsellor who receives them believes them to be joking! "At that time, no one was aware of what was happening with the Internet."
In 2010, Jean-Manuel met Éric, initially just to provide him with funds. " Then he explained to me what the Internet was becoming and the need to offer an alternative, so I followed him." Together, they are launching the "world's largest market, the search market" by launching the first search engine that does not collect the personal data of its users, now available in 25 languages in 42 countries. "We're not interested in who they are, we're interested in what they're looking for. Our universe of products and services is based on trust."
And it works:
The increase in Qwant's traffic is exponential with 115 million requests in November 2018! Since the beginning, traffic has increased by 10 to 20% per month.

Intuition is a mixture of intelligence, knowledge and memory. We all have varying degrees of it. Life is a rebus that you have to decipher: it gives you signs, clues, places people in your way. You have to listen to everything and still follow your own idea.
And he adds, "I've always tried to do only things that entertained or excited me." It's his advice to students: "Believe in it, believe in yourself and believe in what you're doing."
Even if he acknowledges that the times are anxious, there are a thousand opportunities that did not exist before. The list of attractiveness centres is constantly growing, in France and around the world, and the professions of tomorrow are to be invented. "The world is full of cash, there's money for everything, funds for all good ideas." And he adds to conclude:
Yesterday's technology solved the problems of the day before yesterday, and created those of today which in turn will be solved by tomorrow's technology!

In the 1970s, our preparatory math teacher, Claude Riahi, announced that he was joining the Board of Directors of a small, little-known school, in which he also taught at the ISC Paris. We all followed him enthusiastically. We had the feeling that we were part of the birth of something and that was the case! When I see the success of the School and its graduates today, I think that with my friends, we were right to listen to our intuition!
